Understanding PMOS (formerly PCOS)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder, but the medical community is shifting toward a new name: Polycystic Metabolic Ovary Syndrome (PMOS). This change reflects a deeper understanding of the condition's root causes.

Why the Name Change?

The term 'PCOS' focuses heavily on the ovaries and the presence of cysts. However, many women with the condition don't actually have ovarian cysts, and the name ignores the significant metabolic issues involved. 'PMOS' emphasizes the metabolic dysfunction, such as insulin resistance, which is a core driver of the syndrome for most affected women.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms can vary widely but often include irregular or absent periods, excessive facial or body hair (hirsutism), severe acne, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, and thinning hair on the scalp. These symptoms are largely due to elevated androgen levels and insulin resistance.

Management and the Role of Birth Control

While there is no cure for PMOS, symptoms can be effectively managed. Lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, are foundational for addressing insulin resistance. Medically, combination birth control pills are often prescribed as a first-line treatment. They help regulate the menstrual cycle, lower androgen levels to improve acne and excessive hair growth, and protect the uterine lining.
