STI Testing 101

Protecting your sexual health is a vital part of your overall well-being. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are incredibly common, but the good news is that most are easily treatable if caught early. Here is what you need to know about STI testing.

Why Regular Testing is Crucial

Many STIs, including Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, often show no symptoms at all. You or your partner could have an STI and not know it, passing it back and forth or to others. Left untreated, some STIs can lead to serious long-term health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility.

Who Should Get Tested and When?

If you are sexually active, routine testing is recommended. As a general rule, you should get tested at least once a year, or before having sex with a new partner. You should also get tested immediately if you experience symptoms like unusual discharge, pain during sex, or sores.

Birth Control and STIs

It is important to remember that while birth control pills, patches, and IUDs are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, they offer zero protection against STIs. The only way to significantly reduce your risk of contracting or spreading an STI is by using barrier methods, such as condoms, consistently and correctly every time you have sex.
